Pontos Fluorite Ring

The word blue appears in Middle English around the 13th century. Before the sea was commonly described as blue, pontos was the Homeric word for the open sea: distance, passage, and return.

Its colour belongs to another language of perception — green, dark, wine-deep, shifting with light, depth, and danger. At the centre of the Pontos Ring, natural fluorite holds this unstable colour world: green, violet, and purple tones moving through a single stone. Its wide, sculptural form becomes a fragment of that ancient sea language.

Excavated from Homeric language and the buried memory of the Aegean, the Pontos Ring returns as an object of depth and perception.

SYMBOLISM & MEANING

In Homer's Iliad, pontos names the open sea as a field of movement — crossed by ships, marked by distance, longing, and return. Homer called it oinops pontos, "wine-dark sea," a colour that shifts with light and cannot be pinned down. The Pontos Ring begins with this memory.

Natural fluorite gives the idea material form: its green, violet, and wine tones echo a sea that resists one colour or one meaning.
