Parthenope Necklace

I am Parthenope. Siren, voice, shore. My song carried across the water before the ships did.

They say when Odysseus passed without turning to my song, I gave myself to the sea — and the sea brought me to shore. A city rose where I landed. They called it Neapolis. The new city. Naples.

Parthenope is one of the most layered figures in Greek mythology. Naples was built over the memory of her voice, and became the city's symbol. The ancient people of Naples depicted Parthenope on their coin adorned, sovereign, at rest. Through this excavated coin from ancient Rome, she returns not as ruin, but as origin.

Excavated to remind you that the voice, even when refused, can still found a shore.

SYMBOLISM & MEANING

This ancient coin holds two images in tension.

On one side, Parthenope depicted serene and adorned: hair flowing, wearing a pendant earring and pearl necklace. The siren as composure — a voice made sovereign in metal, beauty held at rest. Just as Naples would depict its own soul: with beauty, with dignity, with adornment.

On the other, Nike, goddess of victory, descends from above — wings open, holding a laurel wreath — flying over the Minotaur below. In ancient art, Nike is famously depicted flying to crown victorious heroes. Most likely this is a depiction of the moment after Theseus's victory, the wreath about to be placed on the head of Athens' greatest hero.

Together, the two sides form a small mythology of voice and victory. Parthenope speaks of beauty, memory, and the song that founds a city. Nike and the Minotaur speak of ordeal, and the moment after fear is defeated.

Coins are the visual record of our collective experience and past. Each one a form of message and symbolism, spreading ideas and notions through time. Monumental narratives in miniature metal form.
