SYMBOLISM & MEANING

Sappho’s Ode to Aphrodite, also known as Fragment 1, is her only poem to survive almost whole. It is a direct address to Aphrodite: a poem of invocation, desire, persuasion, and return, in a form borrowed from Homeric epic and bent entirely to her own need.

Across time, translators such as Anne Carson, Mary Barnard, and Diane Rayor have returned to this poem, each confronting the same problem: how to carry a female voice through damaged manuscripts, lost contexts, and the distance between ancient Greek and the present. Sappho’s work remains central to the history of female desire.

Her poetry often moves through longing, the body, and attraction between women; her name and her island, Lesbos, gave language to what later became known as Sapphic and lesbian desire.
